5. Discussion
WASP-119 is a typical hot Jupiter system in terms of the mass
(1.2 MJup), radius (1.3 RJup) and orbital period (2.5 d) of the
planet. The host star has a similar mass to the Sun but appears
to be much older based on its effective temperature and density
(Fig. 1). The orbital period is very close to 2.5 days so there is
the possibility of observing alternate transits of this star from a
given observing site during some observing seasons. The surface
gravity of this star determined from the analysis of its spectrum
(log g = 4.5) is significanty higher than that inferred from the
analysis of the other data (log g = 4.2). Contamination of the
light curve by light from a third star may partly explain this discrepancy because this would make the transit appear shallower than it actually is. There is no direct indication of a third star in
any of the observations we have presented here. Analysis of thespectrum at higher signal-to-noise and high-resolution imaging may help to resolve this discrepancy.
