The Horsehead Nebula

Explanation:
One of the most identifiable nebulae in the sky, the Horsehead Nebula in Orion, is part of a large, dark, molecular cloud. Also known as Barnard 33, the unusual shape was first discovered on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. The red glow originates from hydrogen gas predominantly behind the nebula, ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The darkness of the Horsehead is caused mostly by thick dust, although the lower part of the Horsehead's neck casts a shadow to the left. Streams of gas leaving the nebula are funneled by a strong magnetic field. Bright spots in the Horsehead Nebula's base are young stars just in the process of forming. Light takes about 1,500 years to reach us from the Horsehead Nebula. The above image was taken with the 0.9-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. APOD发马头星云多次了，不过今天我不想去搜索了，大家就看一下大图吧

說明: 獵戶座的馬頭星雲是夜空中最好辨認的星雲之一，它是一個大型暗分子雲的一部份，有時它又被稱為巴納德33。這個有著不尋常形狀的天體，是在18世紀末，從一片照片底板上發現的。星雲紅色的輝光，主要來自星雲後方被亮星參宿增一(Sigma Orionis)所游離的氫氣。暗色的馬頭主要來自濃密的塵埃遮掩了它後方的光，不過馬頸底部左方的陰影，是馬頸所造成的陰影。貫穿過星雲的強大磁場，正迫使大量的氣體飛離星雲。馬頭星雲底部裡的亮點，是來自正在新生階段的年輕恆星。光約需要經過1500年，才會從馬頭星雲傳到我們這裡。上面的影像，是用基特峰國家天文台(Kitt Peak National Observatory)的一部90公分口徑的望遠鏡所拍攝的。
