This is not a composite image. 2048x2048It was taken by Roger Smith using a 2048x2048 scientific CCD which hasmuch higher sensitivity than photographic film, revealing greaterdetail in exposures short enough (20 seconds) to eliminate star trails. The CCD, normally used on the telescope pictured, was temporarily matedto a Zeiss Distagon 40 mm f/4 lens by a "camera body" made in house.

Schmidt-type telescopes are used to take wide angle pictures of large regions of the sky.
This picture was taken by John Lutnes in the late 1960s, shortly afterthe telescope was moved to CTIO, and features observer John Graham in arepresentative pose (yes, we know the dome is closed and the lights areon, this was to indicate how the telescope was used).

An aerial view of the Kitt Peak National Observatory looking north. 。Visible are the 4-meter, as the largest telescope, with the Universityof Arizona's 90-inch and the Warner and Swasey Observatory (24-inchBurrell Schmidt) in the foreground.
A variety of aerial views can be found under the facilities category. 真不错,要能看看就好了 盖一个多少钱? 真带劲那!!!::070821_04.jpg::
