LRO造价5.04亿美元，是宇航局一系列新探月任务组成部分。这个轨道器于6月18日发射，执行为期一年的月球测绘、研究月表成分、寻找月球极地永久性阴暗区陨坑内可能隐藏的水冰等任务。
