MOON MIRAGE: "First it looked like a big boat, then a huge hamburger, then a nuclear explosion," recalls Norwegian photographer Arne V. Hoem. In fact, it was just the Moon, which Hoem rising over the waters of the North Sea on July 13th. "The shape of the moon was changing continuously," says Hoem. Using a digital camera, he captured this snapshot of the evolving scene:
What's going on? Moonlight passing through a layer of warm air just above the sea surface is what causes this eye-catching inferior mirage, which Jules Verne famously likened to an Etrusian Vase. It's often seen by observers watching the sun rise or set. Such photos of the Moon, however, are rare.
