Mars was so bright this summer that not even the light of the full moon could overwhelm it! This multiple-exposure photo shows the full Moon rising, followed by Mars to its lower left. They appear closer together than they actually were due to the timing of the 11 exposures; for the first 3 exposures of the Moon, Mars was still below the treeline.

Location: Phoenix, Arizona.
Date: August 12, 2003.
Time: 8:33 p.m. to 9:23 p.m. MST.
Camera: Olympus OM-1 35mm SLR on fixed tripod.
Film: Fuji Provia 100F slide.
Focal length: 100 mm. Aperture: f/4. Exposure time: 11 exposures every 5 minutes, 1 to 2 seconds each.
Scanner: Nikon Coolscan LS-10E.
