SINGAPORE (AP) -- The Great Wall of China is visible from space, the last manto walk on the moon told a Singapore newspaper, contradicting China's first sp
aceman, who said he couldn't spot the giant fortification.
Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan -- who walked on the moon in December 1972 --
told the Straits Times newspaper he viewed China's most famous monument from s
pace. He said it's a matter of having good eyes and knowing where to look.
"At Earth orbit of 160 kilometers (100 miles) to 320 kilometers (200 miles) hi
gh, the Great Wall is indeed visible to the naked eye," Cernan was quoted as s
aying.
For decades, the Chinese have said the wall was visible from space, with eleme
ntary-school textbooks proclaiming that the structure can be seen by the naked
eye of an orbiting cosmonaut.
But the myth was shattered when Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei returned from spa
ce last year and said could not see the Great Wall while in orbit.
China's Education Ministry has ordered publishers to stop printing the "falseh
ood" that the Wall can be seen from space, the Beijing Times newspaper said Fr
iday.
The Straits Times interviewed Cernan last month when he visited Singapore for
an Asian Aerospace show. It printed the interview Sunday after hearing about B
eijing's order to revise the textbooks.
Cernan's comments also contradict the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Admi
nistration. Its Web site says although many manmade objects can be seen from s
pace without magnification, China's Great Wall is not among them.
The wall stretches thousands of kilometers (miles) across northern China, but
is only a few meters (yards) wide. It is also made from native materials that
match the color of the surrounding landscape, NASA's Web site says.
Cernan's comments in Singapore -- with 75 percent of its population ethnic Chi
nese _ may show he has heightened diplomatic senses along with acute vision. H
e also told the newspaper Singapore could be seen from space.
The tiny diamond-shaped island off the southern tip of Malaysia is too small t
o appear on many world maps.

其实我认为应该是谁都没说谎，杨立伟不知是在什么位置伸出脑袋看的，也许这和角度有关吧，我去查查神五的轨道，总觉得她们都没有必要说谎。应该和他们的位置有关
呵呵。。
太空中要能肉眼看见长城，那么比长城更容易看见的人工建筑物多了。最简单的就是高速公路网，无论对比度还是宽度都比长城
明显得多 西西 众说纷纭~~~我也没机会上去了，不过我这里的软件模拟的地球上看不见。
管它呢，高速路应该是看不见的了吧，因为对比太不明显喽。长城有人比喻过，在太空中看长城等于在几公里以外看一根头发丝，好夸张，不过数字上显示的的确如此，我只好向信杨叔叔了。。。。。。有机会我一定上去看看！希望别是下辈子，如果谁在月亮建个长城就好了~ 肯定看不见 不可一概而论！
阳光斜射的时候长城影子有可能在地势平的地方产生很长的影子
还有，长城反光率和周围不一样的时候，照射的很亮的长城有可能从较暗的背景里显现出来，可以在低于人眼分辨率的情况下被发现 俺支持你。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。楼上地观点:D
em100.gif 是啊，头发丝反光还得“秀发去无踪，头屑更出众”呢！ 如果"秀发去无踪".........也就不会有头皮屑了....还能反光, 超过 —12 等:) 在太空看长城，好比N公里以外开一根头发！！！
太不可能的事情了！
在太空肯定看不见长城的！！
