I saw this in couple of images a few days ago but thought it to be an asteroid,
the longer sequence show the path is at an angle to the ecliptic. Not there in

From 43 observations 2012 Nov. 29-Dec. 2, mean residual 0".61.The
solution presented here is based on the assumption that this is a
return of D/1827 M1 (Pons-Gambart), with two missed returns.The
1827 observations are known to be extremely noisy and this orbit
represents seven normal places to ~ 0.5 deg.

新彗星乃是百年失踪彗星?新发现托出新谜团 本站早先提及的新彗星,在美国东部时间12月1日晚得到正式编号为C/2012 V4,命名暂缺。CCD观测指出该彗星亮度约为11等,阿兰·海尔给出的目视报告为亮度9.4等,彗发直径2.2'。 麦克·梅耶指出新彗星的轨道根数和接近200年前丢失的Pons-Gambart彗星(D/1827 M1)很像,中野主一和 Gareth Williams 尝试将两个轨道联系起来,但1827年观测数据误差相当大(均大于0.5度),因此结果非常不可靠。如果这两颗彗星的确是同一个目标,那它的周期约为62.1年,且在1830年和1959年以略多于1AU的距离掠过土星和天王星。以下是 MPEC 2012-X02给出的轨道根数。

Image taken on 2012 Dec 3.45 at an altitude of about 14 deg - with the seeing being somewhat poor. Image is a stack of 5 x 30sec exposures. Image size is 24' x 16' (north to top). Imager appears to show a tail of about 8' in PA 93deg.
被我猜对了,周期应该是185年左右,不是62年。
