[LAMOST科普]土星专辑:“卡西尼—惠更斯”土星探测器探索土星
在经过近7年漫长的太空旅程后,美欧联合打造的“卡西尼”号飞船目前已经逼近土星轨道。美国宇航局喷气推进实验室的约翰·塞皮卡斯30日对新华社记者说,如果一切正常,它将于格林尼治时间7月1日凌晨4时12分(北京时间12时12分)进入土星轨道,成为进入土星轨道的第一艘人造飞船。喷气推进实验室负责实施这项耗资33亿美元的土星探索计划。据介绍,目前“卡西 尼”号正以每小时超过7.8万公里的速度逼近土星轨道。按计划,它将于格林尼治时间1日2时36分(北京时间10时36分)启动减速火箭,96分钟后将时速降至2240公里,以便土星引力能够捕获它,使其进入预定的土星轨道。
不过,在开始减速进入土星轨道之前,“卡西尼”号将穿越15.8万公里漂浮着石块的空间,如果与岩石直接相撞就可能毁于一旦。但喷气推进实验室的科学家对此并未过于担心,他们认为飞船的天线将起到一定的保护作用。
“卡西尼”号是1997年10月15日从美国发射升空的。科学家希望通过它对土星进行近距离研究,了解更多有关土星大气、光环和卫星的信息,探索太阳系以及生命形成的秘密。

The Huygens probe, built by the European Space Agency, along with Cassini's powerful cameras, will soon penetrate the thick atmospheric haze which enshrouds this moon, which is about the size of Mercury.
The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow angle camera on May 23, 2004, from a distance of 21.6 million kilometers (13.4 million miles) from Titan. The image scale is 129 kilometers (80 miles) per pixel. The image was magnified to aid visibility.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras, were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute, Boulder, Colo.

This narrow-angle camera image of Titan was taken through the Clear filter from a distance of 0.9 million km on 25 August 1981. With a phase angle of 155 degrees, the thick atmosphere can be seen illuminated completely around the disk. A distinct upper haze layer is present over much of the circumference of the disk. JPL managed the Voyager Project for NASA's Office of Space Science.

卡西尼号传回照片:由多个同心环带组成
“卡西尼”号土星探测器在进入预定轨道飞行数小时后,于7月1日传回了“令人兴奋的”土星光环的照片,从这些照片看上去,土星光环就象一个带槽的留声机唱碟或者纹理细腻的木片一样。当这些从14.4亿多公里外传回来的原始黑白图片到达美国航空航天局喷气推进实验室时,科学家们掩饰不住内心的兴奋。照片显示,土星的光环是由许多个同心环带组成,这些环带有的亮、有的暗、有的宽、有的很窄,有的边缘清晰,有的边缘模糊,有的表面泛起波纹,就象波纹纸板一样,有的表面却很平滑。
大小与公共汽车相仿的“卡西尼”号土星探测器是于6月30日晚些时候经过了土星的两个光环进行预定轨道,开始对土星及其卫星进行有史以来最为详尽的探测活动。土星探测项目成像小组领导人卡罗琳-帕科(Carolyn Porco)表示,“这一切用言语真的是难以形容,它太让人兴奋了!这些照片太美了,太出乎我的意料了!它们让我感到无比震撼。”
