Last weekend, I had a substantial experience at school. We (Beijing skywatcher association) organized an activity of watching the moon, with a purpose of popularizations of astronomy. We took along with us several telescopes, the caliber ranging from 70 to 90 mm. and many of the members of this association showed up, including wangzhenshi, head of BSA. We assembled those scopes in front of library, where flows of people walked through now and then.
This activity is in honor of the launching of CHANG E detector in the near future. It is reported that the detector is responsible for exploration of the surface of moon and doing research in constitution of soil and rock on the moon, with an attempt to discover the source of livings.Without any question, the moon is the chief role on tonight's stage. So we had our telescopes pointing to that bright, appealing body hanging in the sky. After some adjustment in focus, they were made available to use for observation. As time passed by, an increasing number of people were attracted to come, to see what was happening, to have a look at the moon through our instruments. That small, naughty boy was amplified to a substantial degree so that those watchers couldn’t help screaming on their first sight of “monster”,which is characterized by countless lunar craters on its surface. “What are on the moon?” “Why does the beautiful moon look so ugly through telescope?” “Is there any existence of living things on that heavenly body?”. Facing these questions posed by watchers, we tried our best to give them reasonable explanation and to make mysterious things easy to understand. People were rather excited and took pictures of the amplified moon in the eye pieces with DC or even mobile phone. Nobody was unwilling to keep this wonderful memory in mind. We took group picture in the final.
What a good, meaningful event! Not only did we let more people come to realize the beauty of astronomy, but we might also exchange notions and experience of observing as well as astronomical photographing.It is hoped that such kind of activity can be held more often!
