Bow Valley, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

Most of British Columbia was cloudy and/or rainy so I decided to drive to Alberta to watch Perseids. It was cloudy when I arrived to Banff National Park, but the sky opened up some part of the night. This image was taken at 04:36 Mountain Time.

Keith Breazeal,
The California Sierra Nevada Mountains just south of Lake Tahoe at the 7,500 foot elevation.
Aug. 11, 2009

High in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains the sky is spectacular. Even with the moonlight, the Perseids were visible to the north. In this super wide field photo, the Milky Way provides a dramatic backdrop for the Perseids. This 90 second exposure captures the landscape as if were daylight and brings out the beautiful night sky. The Perseid in this photo was one of the nights best and brightest displays.

Gotcha! The distinctive colour change as the meteor comes through the atmosphere can clearly be seen here as well as a pair of terminal bursts as the Perseid meteoroid finally meets its end.

Here are two bright Perseid fireballs that fell during a spike in activity between 1:30 and 2:30 o'clock MDT on August 12, 2009.

The first one (Perseid 47) is a 30-sec exposure taken at 1:48 am MDT. The second one (Perseid 94 - the brightest of the night) was captured at 2:14 am MDT. Both were taken with a Fuji Finepix Pro S2 digital camera set at ISO 400 with a 16 mm wide angle lens at f2.8.

I set up my camera last night hoping to get a few Perseids. This one shot across the sky behind my back. I didn't see it, but the camera did!

Tonite's display was even better than last night. We saw quite a few bright meteors and lots of earthgrazers early on. My daughters and I had a blast! Photos were taken at the Ashton Observatory NE of Des Moines, IA - home of the Des Moines Astronomical Society.

It was a perfectly clear and cool summer night (~6700ft elevation) and the moonlit meteor shower was really wonderful! I shot more than 1400 frames with various Canon DSLR cameras and wide-angle lenses, and was very lucky to have captured a handful of brilliant meteors. Details: ISO1600, f/2.8, 30-sec each. Some of the many frames that I shot will be turned into time-lapse movies of this year's event. The movies will appear on Cosmotions.com in the near future. Stay tuned!
