欧洲空间局的普朗克望远镜，设计目标是为以史无前例的高灵敏的角解析力获取宇宙微波背景辐射在整个天空的的各向异性图。普朗克望远镜于2009年5月14日和赫歇尔太空天文台一起由阿丽亚娜-5运载火箭发射升空。BBC报道，普朗克望远镜目前已经达到了它的运行温度，难以置信的零下273.05C——只比绝对零度高十分之一摄氏度。虽然实验室里可以创造出比普朗克更冷的温度，但研究人员表示，目前太空中不存在比它更冷的东西，普朗克望远镜是有史以来最冷的飞行器。欧航局发表的公报称，普朗克于2日晚间飞抵运行轨道——即距地球约160万公里的“第二拉格朗日点”附近。为达到最佳观测效果，它携带的冷却系统开始向宇宙间散热，通过3台冷却器的作用，普朗克的温度被降到零下273.05C。低温对于普朗克的观测至关重要，这将使得辐射热测量计处于最灵敏的状况下，能够探测宇宙微波背景辐射的细微温度变化——一摄氏度的百万分之一。普朗克将帮助回答现代科学中最重要的问题之一：宇宙的起源，过去的演变和未来的趋势。普朗克预计8月中旬将开始正式执行探测任务
