I used a stark white piece of driftwood, bleached by the alkaline water of Mono Lake as a foreground anchor, with ominous tufas reflected in the distance on the mirror surface. At first I was disappointed that there wouldn't be clouds for my trip to Mono Lake, but when I saw this scene, I thought, PERFECT!

The circular stone terraces were built by Inca for their agricultural research. Some of the terraces are 100 meters deep and were used for experimenting with growing crops at different altitudes. They were watered with special irrigation system and the Inca were able to grow more than 250 plant species.

I was watching a few eagles fishing in the Boise River when I captured these two fighting. Or maybe they were playing “King of the Tree Stump.” The eagle on the stump has that look in his eye that says “Don’t you even try it." The eagle that is in midair did proceed to knock off the one on the stump. I guess the old “evil eye” didn’t work this time.

A great Pyrenees dog defends her flock of angora goats. I asked the farmer what her name was and he said "well, we just call'r goat dog". She lives out there night and day protecting them from mountain lions, coyotes, and poachers. The goats are used for their Angora fur and are sheared every season.

After a rarely seen spyhopping of a dwarf minke whale the whale slowly descended in my direction and we came close to a 1.5m distance. The shot happened early in the morning around 7 a.m. and it was a rough surface and it was not easy to control my own movement. 一只冻僵的狼
It was one of my last images of the year 2008. I spotted this frozen coyote on the side of a gravel road on my way into town. This is exactly how I found the coyote - frozen stiff, sat up, at the side of the road. We'd been having temps of below -30 degrees C for two weeks. I guess this is part of the natural selection.

A feral stallion grazes in the Cedar Island marsh, just as his ancestors have done for hundreds of years.

狮子鱼
I was lucky enough to follow this lionfish into a huge ball of baitfish. Very exciting moments as the baitfish swirled to avoid being eaten.

In midafternoon, in Yellowstone, I found this lone tree taking a battering from wind and snow. Its bark had been rubbed off by deer or elk. It just screamed, what a price some have to pay, when they are independent of others and not protected in a group.

I arrived to take pictures of the cows just in time to capture this moment.

This crab would be perfectly camouflaged in its natural habitat, the dark sand beaches of Kaua'i's southwest shore. On the Glass Beach, however, said to be created by decades of shipwrecks and offshore glass dumping, the crab stands in sharp contrast to the sea-polished, glittering glass shards. One interesting question: will the locals evolve colored spots to blend into their new environment?
