Object type:galaxy (SBc)
Size:28'
Magnitude:8.2 mag
Constellation:UMa
Distance:22 Mio Ly
Notes:
The alternate name of the big face on galaxy M101 in constellation UMa is 'Pinwheel Galaxy', because of it's grand spiral arms. M101 is a huge galaxy with a visible diameter of 170,000 light years.
Many HII regions are visible along the spiral arms.

Object type:galaxy (Sc)
Size:11.8' x 1.3'
Magnitude:11.1 mag
Constellation:Dra
Distance:33 Mio Ly
Notes:Because NGC5907 is seen almost exactly edge-on and because it appears extremely elongated, shaped like a "knife edge" or a splinter, it's popular name is "splinter galaxy". The above image shows a very faint tidal tail (better visible in the inverted image), which forms a loop extending more than 150,000 light-years from the narrow, edge-on spiral galaxy. This loop represents the ghostly trail of a dwarf galaxy, which merged with NGC5907 over four billion years ago.KUG1513+566 is a dwarf companion galaxy of NGC5907 (clearly visible on the right side above the splinter galaxy). This galaxy is responsible for the warped disk of NGC5907, which can be better seen in the inverted image.Near the bottom side of the above image one can identify two distant galaxy clusters:
  • NSC J151718+560754 at z=0.10 (light travel time = 1.3 billion years)
  • NSC J151551+560911 at z=0.27 (light travel time = 3.0 billion years)
A further extremely distant galaxy cluster can be found near the left side of the above image:
  • WHL J151732.0+562357 at z=0.45 (light travel time =4.6 billion years)

Magnitude:11.3 mag
Constellation:UMa

Object data of NGC4216
Object type:galaxy (SBb)
Size:7.8' x 1.8'
Magnitude:11.1 mag
Constellation:Vir
Distance:40 Mio Ly
Notes:The three edge-on galaxies NGC4216 (in the center of the image), NGC4222 (top left) and NGC4206 (bottom right) are members of the Virgo galaxy cluster. In the east of NGC4216 one can find a very faint structure, which could be a possible tidal tail. This tail is much better visible in the inverted image.  The two dwarf galaxies PGC39324 and PGC39303 are maybe connected with the tidal tail.

Object data of NGC2857 (Arp1)
Object type:galaxy (Sc)
Size:2.2'
Magnitude:13.2 mag
Constellation:UMa
Distance:220 Mio Ly
Notes:The face on spiral galaxy NGC2857 is the first entry in the Arp catalogue. It's Arp class is "spiral galaxies with low surface brightness". NGC2857 shows two very long thin spiral arms, as can be seen clearly in the above image.

Object data of Arp285 (NGC2854 + NGC2856)
Object type:galaxy pair
Size:NGC2854: 1.6'  /  NGC2856: 1.1'
Magnitude:NGC2854: 13.8mag  /  NGC2856: 14.0 mag
Constellation:UMa
Distance:130 Mio Ly
Notes:The galaxy pair Arp285 is a member of the Arp class "double galaxies, infall and attraction". The huge tidal arms, which are very well visible in the inverted image, are a clear sign for the interaction between these galaxies. The above image shows on the left side also a nice group of galaxies in a distance of 370 Mio light years. UGC5016, CGCG 238-053 and CGCG 238-054 are brighter members of this galaxy group.

Object data of M105
Object type:galaxy (E1)
Size:5.3' x 4.8'
Magnitude:10.5 mag
Constellation:Leo
Distance:56 Mio Ly
Notes:
M105 is a member of the Leo I group of galaxies. It is a typical representive of elliptical galaxies. Because of it's uniformity of color over the entire range of luminosity, M105 is used as a photometric standard for the surface brightness distribution of elliptical galaxies.
The other two bright galaxies in the above image are NGC3384 and NGC3389.
Many background galaxies, which can be found in the image are members of the more distant galaxy cluster ZwCl 1045.8+1251.
