As an exception to my own rule of posting only my own photos, I couldn't resist this sharp photo of a male Bufflehead taken by Jim Boardman, which I downloaded from Dreamstime.com.

January 16th, 2009
Note: Normally, it's difficult to get a good, sharp photo of these shy birds since they prefer to stay out in the middle of a lake, a large pond or the widest part of a river, and rarely if ever stray close to the shore. |

Note: The Sandhill Crane, photographed from a distance of about 150 yards, is the first I've seen in Central Oregon. As I cautiously walked across the soggy Sparks Lake floodplain to try to get a closer shot, the wary bird kept moving farther away. So this is the best photo I could get. |

Note: Swallows in flight are nearly impossible to capture with a camera. The Violet-green and Northern Rough-winged Swallows pictured here were photographed catching bugs over the Deschutes River while whizzing past me about 10-20 feet away at 25-30 miles per hour. A telephoto lens zoomed to its maximum of 300mm, along with photo-cropping resulted in these somewhat blurry pictures. That's why I included the stock photo above by Michael Woodruff of Spokane, Washington, downloaded from Dreamstime.com.
