Science : Do alien worlds throng faraway galaxy?
A DISTANT galaxy may be teeming with planets about the size of the Earth, says a researcher in the US. The galaxy, which has no name, lies in the constellation of Ursa Major and is more than 4 billion light years away. But other researchers in the field are highly sceptical of the claim.
Rudy Schild of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, believes he has seen signs of planets in the foreground of the galaxy, in the form of fluctuations in the brightness of light coming from behind them.
The galaxy is too remote to study in much detail, but it happens to lie between Earth and a remote quasar known as Q0957 +561. It betrays its presence by gravitational lensingbending and amplifying the light of the quasar behind itso that the light reaches Earth by two different paths, appearing as two quasar images.
