A striking image of male impala locking curly horns has been crowned the winner of the Royal Society of Biology's photography competition. Barbara Stanley took the captivating picture (shown) on the plains of Etosha National Park in Namibia

Oliver Tidswell was crowned Young Photographer of the Year by the society for his photograph of a 'lonely' alpine plant (pictured above) which was taken at 18,208 feet (5,550 metres) above sea level at Pensi La Pass mountain pass in Ladakh, India

Not all the entries showed dramatic landscapes. Anthony Cooper's shot (pictured above) shows a red ant being 'scared off' by sawfly 'caterpillars'. One difference between the larvae and caterpillars is that they have six or more pairs of 'prolegs'  on the abdomen, while caterpillars have five pairs or fewer. They are seen here feeding on a ravaged leaf

This fish is the subject of Paddy Rayan's photo, entitled 'All, all alone'. It's nestled in an anemone for protection from predators. Its tiny size can be determined from the tentacles in which it is hovering, but it's too small to identify. The snap was taken in Puerto Galera, Philippines

The competition's theme was conflict and survival, and an image of mating toads on a lotus leaf was chosen as one of the best, taken by Darpan Basak. It was taken in Barrackpore, West Bengal, India

Entries among some 350 submitted for the competition included Debdatta Chakraborty's Sri Lankan stilt fishermen casting their lines into the sea (pictured above) a tiny bright yellow fish in a reef, mating toads and even a snail infected by a parasite

This mesmeric image of patterns in the desert created by wind and a solitary plant was taken by Timofey Zubarev in the under 18 category

A darker side of nature is portrayed by Beverley Brouver, in her image 'Double Trouble'. It shows one snail (on the right) infected with a parasitic flatworm which cause the snail to seek light, increasing the chance of bring eaten by birds

Davide Gaglio's beautiful photograph shows two birds squabbling. As well as being a great photo it references the problem of falling fish stocks in the sea. A 2006 report says 'unless the current situation improves, stocks of all species currently fished for food are predicted to collapse by 2048' The image was taken in Robben Island, South Africa

This image by Fabio Pupin shows a battle between two muskox bulls, charging at each other head down in a powerful clash. Conflicts within the same sex in order to mate is a powerful selective pressure in evolutionary processes. The fight of two muskox bulls in the rutting season in Dovrefjell National Park, Norway perfectly depicts it
