第一种:Draper-type machine (single crank)
This is the mother of all machines. Its principle seems to have been elaborated by Huygens, about 1738, and improved by Lord Rosse, and more recently by Henry Draper, an American astronomer. Here are the different parts which compose this machine
- a rotating plate (1) supporting the mirror. This plate is usually above a table (2), and may be surrounded by a container which will collect the excess polishing product dripping from the plate
- a rotating stroke crank (3)
- an arm (4) (square metal tubing) aligned with the center of the mirror (5) and put in motion by the crank
- drive pin connecting the lap to the arm …
- a fixed guide (6) that lets the other end of the arm move back and forth when the crank is in action
- one or two motors activating the crank and the plate separately
- a device to regulate the rotating speed of the crank and the plate (pulleys or electronic variator...)
