(meteorobs) Aurigids from CA: bright, nice - but not many  Message List

Reply | Forward Message #33053 of 33054 < Prev | Next >

Here's the raw deal from Fremont Peak, California, before going to
bed (it's 7:15 a.m. now :-): Three observers saw 30 to 38 Aurigids each
tonight in about 1 1/2 hours under perfect conditions. There was one
striking cluster of three within one second and close to each other,
otherwise there were often long lulls. But the Aur were nearly all
bright and had nice wakes (though no persistent trains). There was no
pronounced maxiumum at either 11:36 or 11:33 (as the latest models
said) UTC, rather here are my counts for 5-minute intervals from
11:10 to 12:20 UTC (several more Aur were seen between 10:38 and
11:10 UTC, but not counted systematically):

2 - 5 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 0 - 0 - 2 - 2 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 (then dawn came).

So for us the peak came early, at 11:15 UTC perhaps. And another
strange observation: In the first half of the outburst, most meteors
were high in the sky - and in the 2nd most every meteor was very low
in the sky. Certainly just a statistical fluke, right ...?

Daniel signing off from San Juan Bautista, CA, USA

meteorobs) Aurigids quick report from Oregon   Message List

Reply | Forward   Message #33056 of 33057 < Prev | Next >

I got out nice and early at 2:30am (0930UT). We had rain showers throughout
Thursday night, so I was just happy to see clear sky. The moonlight was
pretty intense, so I chose to obstruct it behind a tree. Unfortunately, this
also brought some other trees into view, and I lived with a 20-25%
obstructed FOV throughout the morning. In retrospect, I probably could have
seen a few more bright Aurigids around the time of maximum if I had
disregarded the Moon and chose an unobstructed view toward the east. But at
least these data should be consistent.

I was absolutely skunked for the first half hour. My first meteor, 39
minutes into the watch, was a blue -3 ANT that I managed to see behind me.
It was another 13 minutes before the first Aurigid appeared (and 8 minutes
after that the first sporadic came). So I had a pretty solid baseline of
background activity :-). Aurigid rates began to pick up at 1041UT. The
activity didn't build to a sharp maximum, but rather was a series of spurts
and lulls like a major shower maximum. I had several minutes with two
Aurigids, and only one with three (1121-1122UT). No bursts of multiple
meteors. At 1126UT, there were nearly simultaneous -5 and 0 Aurigids. I
thought: "This is really going to get good." Unfortunately, it was almost
over by that time, and activity slowed to a crawl. Overall, I saw 33
Aurigids in 2.7+ hours Teff. The report below contains five-minute intervals
over the most active period.

The Aurigids were bright, with a mean magnitude of +0.5. There were 4
Aurigid fireballs of -3 or brighter, and 8 Aurigids in the negative
magnitudes. The predominant color was orange-red, although there were a
couple of blue ones and the two brightest fireballs were white. The
brightest fireball of -5 left a twisting 30-second train.

In spite of the rather low numbers, this event had a very dramatic feel to
it as I never knew what was going to happen next.

I was out from 1 AM till twilight this morning (0509-0911 UT) with LMsomewhere between 4 and 5, hopefully some stars I noted and the LM areacounts I did will help narrow the range.1 Hour Aurigid totals were 0,1,1, and 2 if my sleepy memory serves me well. Regarding meteorobs, it's interesting. One of the 2 accounts I'm subsribed from has received all the posts, theother hasn't.I've seen this behaviour before, it usually catches up later. Wayne in NJ

METEOR FLURRY: Congratulations to Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute and colleagues who predicted this morning's Aurigid meteor shower. It materialized right on time in a sharp peak shortly before 1130 UT or 4:30 am PDT, Saturday, Sept. 1st. In Guffey, Colorado, Chris Peterson video-recorded this spectacular fireball:
