          Today the moon was very bright. It was not easy to see the comet Holmes with the necked eyes. So, I create one picture of the moon and one of comet Holmes and create one out of two. Canon EOS 20D, focus distance 100/1000 refractor and 80/600 refractor. Moon 100 ASA/125 secondes, Comet Holmes 1600 ASA, 60 secondes Kind regards Günther

I have been following this comet since the evening of the 24th. I've taken images every evening since then and combined them into a montage showing the position and size.

       String of Pearls. I carefully superimposed and aligned the stars in 4 photos of Comet Holmes between October 29th and November 3rd. I then blended the layers into one image. The resulting image looks like a string of pearls and show the growth of the comet. Data is missing for 2 days due to cloudy weather. Imaged with a digital SLR and a 4" apochromatic refractor at prime focus.

      The weather has finally thwarted my efforts to add another pearl to the composite image of Comet 17P/Holmes which I refer to as the "String of Pearls". The images were taken between October 29th and November 6th and show the growth of the expanding coma. I used the same settings on a DSLR and 4" Apo refractor in each photo to keep the comparison accurate. Each photo was aligned so the stars matched up and then the layers were blended. November in Southern Ontario is almost always overcast and getting clear opportunities six nights in a row to photograph the comet was unbelievable. I did have to cope with blustery winds and wet snow on the last two nights, but the brief clearings were worth it.

       Watching the coma expand night after night has been fascinating. Sequence of four frames taken each night with a Canon 20Da and 90mm APO. Each frame a stack of 25 10sec exposures processed identically.





This is an animation of Comet Holmes over two nights. It shows the expansion of the gas/dust shell. Both images were taken with a SV80S apo refractor and SBIG ST-8E CCD camera.




Although not spectacular like McNaught, Holmes has its own unique charms! I stayed most of the night at the campus observatory to get these pics and have to be back at work shortly. But it was well worth it! Details: Canon 20DA ISO 800, 152mm f/9 refractor, 2x30s shots about 75 minutes apart (12:27, 01:43 EDT)
