Mandii, nice work. I really like the first Saturn short, really sharp. Keep it up.

MANDII : Today, 12:08 AM

Thanks all of you .
Tonight I try again 3X barlow , better than last night .

CLOUDY NIGHTS

mexjon : 02/24/11 01:48 AM from Jacksonville, FL- Merida Yucat...
Whatcamera are you shooting with, and are you stacking images, or is this asnapshot, one exposure pic? Your first image is better than anysnapshot (afocal connected to Celestron 8-24mm zoom) that I've taken ofSaturn so far.

I would imagine that you are not using a Neximageor similar video camera, right? Most of mine have been with a NikonDSLR and a Canon Powershot IS. Did you use a filter in these shots?

I like how you keep at it, and thanks for posting your progress.

John, the gringo Mexican

MANDII : 02/24/11 04:08 AM
Well John , thank you .
Camera is the DSI-I , the color model .
First picture is used together with a 2X barlow .
As you know , the Meade DSI is a kind of CCD imager(by photo basis ) , not a kind of video device .
It takes many pictures( flames) and I stacked and handle all of them in software REGISTAX 5.0 .

Asyou can see the equipment description in the 1st Saturn photo ,exposure timming control is set at 0.077s for each photo , total 253photos is got and stacked . I didn't use a filter . But this time theMask is very helpful in focusing .
Last night as I tried the stars ,by using the Mask , I can easily see the difference when I turns thefocus . And a bright star become Sparkle as I look at the image whenit's focused well . For territorial or planets , this Mask can be usedin the similar way .

mexjon : 02/24/11 05:49 AM from Jacksonville, FL- Merida Yucat...

Ithink I'll get one of those masks. The hardest thing, I think, for mostfolks is getting that fine focus. Thanks for your reply.

rdl800 : 02/24/11 06:28 AM from Connecticut
Nice setup! ..thanks for posting..

Oneof the things I thought of when I looked at your pictures are the timesI've had under the stars in different parts of the world. I often thinkthat no matter what country or how far one travels, the stars canalways be counted on to remain the same... except south of the equator!

Cloudy NIGHTs

UmaDog : 02/26/11 12:04 AM from Long Island, NY
Thank you for sharing your images of Saturn. How about M93 next?

MANDII : 02/26/11 11:41 AM
Thank you .
Yes, I may try this one , the M93 cluster .
Because as I check it just now , it's in location about 40 degree elevation in southern side at time around 9:00 p.m in this season , that is a good timming and good position for me , because normally I can afford to do imaging from 9:00p.m to 12:00p.m , too late I need to go bed . And 40 degree is a good position . I mean easy to manupulate the scope . But just one thing that the southern sky area may get a bit light pollution in my area .

let's see it .
Need to wait good weather comes ,and bring me some clear nights .

mexjon : 02/25/11 09:59 AM from Jacksonville, FL- Merida Yucat...
Is it just not barlowing well, or is it a matter of fine focus? Your very first one with 2X is so much clearer than even this one, although this one is so much better than the other 3X. I'm sure you're going to figure this out soon.

I think maybe you should play with the frame rate a bit and see what difference that makes.

MANDII : 02/25/11 10:48 PM

Yes , John .

Actually , the reason can be much . ..
At first , if the maginification getting higher , the image should be less sharp , this is very natural . My scope is 6" aparture 750mm FL , maximun magnification should be around 150mm X 2 = 300X . I had used a 7mm eyepeice to look at the saturn that night , 7mm plus the 3X barlow equal (750mm/150mm X3 )=321 , means magnification 321 is larger than maximun allowance . So when I look at it in eyepiece , it's already getting blur , but not very blur . However , The picture captured and after processed , is better than visual observation . But I am not sure what magnification is when I am using the DSI camera . I think the FL of a DSI is very similar to an 7mm eyepiece , I mean the Focal length , but anyway , I am not sure at this point .

2ndly , the 3X barlow is good or not , I cannot know it . I got it at ordinary price . I only know the second 3X picture is better than the first one .

3rdly , the sky condition is also varies , but this should not make it differnt so much , because the two nights seems not so big difference in transparancy .

Fouthly , image process is also needed to be counted .
This time I use IRIS , not Registax .

Finally as you said , exposure timming / capturing timming can also cause the difference .

So... I cannot find out what problem is , or even if there is any problem or not , for this 3X saturn .

mexjon : 02/27/11 08:19 AM from Jacksonville, FL- Merida Yucat...
I think it would go like this MANDII. 7mm x 3x barlow would make it a 2.3mm eyepiece equivalent. 750mm/2.3mm = 326X, a little over your maximum, and a bit more than the way you figured it.

It would take some transparency to be clear at that high mag. Maybe cut down to a 2.5x barlow, and make sure it's quite high in the air. I think.

Are you sure that you are getting a good focus, or do you need to extend/shorten the train a bit to get optimum focus? I would start a new thread in the Astrophotography forum where someone who knows could help you. I will enjoy following that thread. This is, after all, observatories.

MANDII : 02/27/11 08:23 PM
Thanks for your opinion , John .

Uncle Peter : Today, 04:50 AM from Toronto, Ontario
Great pics of Saturn Mandii.

Do you have a low-quality 3x barlow? I have a low quality 3x Barlow that can't focus properly, even when I'm looking at the moon.

MANDII : Today, 10:36 AM
Thanks Uncle Peter .

I cannot sure what the problem is caused by actually , because there is two MAIN factors affacting this blurring .

Firstly , May be the telescope has reached it's maximun magnification( 6"/F5 scope has maximun mag.=150mm X 1.5 = 225X, If I am using a DSI camera , currently the mag. using 3X barlow I estimated is around 750mm/7mm*3=321X ) , so it's already reach the maximun allowance of the scope , or it's very near to the maximun .

2ndly , the 3X barlow is no good quality . The other reasons , for example , my focusing , sky condition , and image post proccess , should not be accounted too much for this problem . Because basicly I am doing the same way as the 2X barlow did . So why the 3X image is much worser when it's replacing the 2X barlow under a very similar condition ? It's obviously the reason of telescope or barlow itself .

If I want to find it out , I need to test by another BIGGER scope , or another 3X barlow with better quality . But so far I don't want to input some money for this kind of testing . Because it's not worth to do so . Actually the 2X magnification is enough for me . The main reason is , even it's magnified , let say 3X or 5X or even more , the picture is just looks bigger . Even it can be revealled some details of the planets , but the detail is always same everytime . Means today you take this picture , tommorrow you will take the same picture , everytime is just same basicly . And also , you can only have two targets ( Jupitor / Saturn ) for this kind of planet imaging . In summary speaking , the input cost is much . But the final rewards is not so big . Let say If such investment can help in DSO imaging , that would be totally different . There is so many targets , everytime you can take different image of different DSO objects . That will have much much rewards for the changes . But the fact is that : getting bigger magnification , getting much worser DSO pictures as they are dim objects .

US ASTRONOMY / CLOUDY NIGHTS

This is an Iron Pillar I installed recently . Self-design and tailor made in China( shenzhen ) for only 300 dollars .Body weighted over 20KG and Loading over 100KG is no problem as said by the shop makers . It can be adjusted the mount's horizontal water level because the ground is not plain enough .You can see the bottom two plates is clapped together by 4 big screws in controlling the maximun 10CM adjustment in height very precisely . And the mount can be put over it in different height levels , for better visual effect .In reaching certain height , the polar star can be seen in the polar scope , that's necessary for polar alignment. The pillar is firmly anchored on the ground in the DOME at a position being choosen that the center point of the mount's DEC axis is passing through the center of the DOME . Not the pillar put dirrectly under the center of the DOME , that can be resulted in maximun space for the telescope in moving all around freely . I had tested different telescope rotating positions without problem . Since it's a hollow pillar , I put much sand inside to strengthen it's resistence to small vibration , make it more stable during astro-photography .
