由国家自然科学基金委和教育部发起、由国家天文台承办的
“第二届中国河外天文学暑期学校”将于2005年5月15－24日在
天津举办。本届暑期学校的主题是“星系团”。

由组织者Simon White教授和武向平研究员邀请的五位国际知名
专家将来华进行为期10天的授课和辅导。

与上届一样，本届暑期学校的工作语言为英语。

授课对象主要为国内研究生，并欢迎国内研究人员、以及部分
来自其他东亚地区的研究生和年轻学者参加。

讲习班将为最多100名学生（视经费情况）提供当地食宿的
全额资助。

会议注册的截止日期为2005年4月5日。

About the Summer School;

This Summer School Series, sponsored by the National
Science
Foundation of China and the Chinese Ministry of Education, is
intended to introduce young scientists to current research in
extragalactic astronomy.

The schools are aimed primarily but not exclusively at graduate
students in the early part of their PhD studies. They will
consist of a small number of coherent lecture courses with
mixed
theoretical and observational emphasis. These will be given by
internationally prominent specialists and will be supplemented
by afternoon tutorials.

Graduate students from Astronomy or Physics departments are
welcome
and are expected to have had courses in at least some of the
following: astronomy, astrophysics, space physics, or related
applied mathematics or theoretical physics.
 
About 100 students will be accepted and will have their local
costs covered. Participants from East Asian countries other
than
China are welcome.

The first school was held in Shanghai in April, 2004 on the
subject
"Galaxies and Galaxy Evolution".

This second school will be held in Tianjin in May 15-24, 2005,  
with the topic "Galaxy Clusters". Five internationally prominent
specialists (Richard Bower, Andy Fabian, Carlos Frenk, Yannick
Mellier,
and Piero Rosati) will give pedagogical lectures on this topic.

 
About Tianjin:

Tianjin is one of the biggest cities in China 137 km east of
Beijing.
More than 10 fast trains connect the two cities each day.


Accommodation:

The school will be held in Tianjin Normal University (TNU).
All the lecturers and students will be housed in the Foreign
Students Guesthouse of TNU (a 3-star level hotel on campus).
We have reserved double rooms at a reduced price of about
140 RMB per room per day (1 USD = 8 RMB).


Financial Support:

About 100 students (depending on the funding situation) will
have their local costs covered.


Registration:

The deadline of registration is April 5, 2004.

There will be NO registration fee for students.

We also welcome faculty members and especially young
postdoctoral
researchers. (A registration fee of 300 RMB is required for
participants other than students to cover meals and other
costs.)
