伦敦6月29日报道，欧洲航天局和美国宇航局的科学家们导演的一幕“太空大片”即将进入高潮，彗星探测器“深度撞击”号释放出的一个撞击器将于7月4日与一颗距离地球八千万公里的彗星相撞。

　　这颗彗星探测器是于2005年1月发射升空的，他的目标是一颗距离地球八千万公里的被称为tempel-1的彗星，目的是为了观察撞击发生时发生的情况，及窥探彗星的内部结构。科学家们希望，深入彗星内部寻觅和研究太阳系形成时的冰冻残留物，将使他们能够了解太阳系形成早期４０多亿年前的情况，以加深对太阳系起源的理解。

　　深度撞击任务调研员科索表示，我的任务是观察尘埃从这个彗星上飘起的情况，通过这次撞击会产生什么样的尘埃，以及从撞击发生后所产生的尘埃总量和种类中我们能学到些什么。

　　彗星是几十亿年前太阳系形成时所产生的碎片。根据推算，这次撞击能产生相当于４．５吨炸药造成的巨大爆炸，并在彗星表面撞击出一个约有足球场那么大，１４层楼那么深的凹洞，目前专家们已经作好了用哈勃望远镜从地球观察这次撞击的准备。

　　科索说，如果彗星撞击器被彗星上的尘埃所碰撞和干扰，那将是彗星（碰撞）导致的自然结果，我们所能做的只是从地球上观察。

　　如果一切顺利的话“深度撞击”所携带的两架望远镜将监测这次撞击，然后飞掠彗星在近处进行观察。天文学家们正在组织一场国际规模的观测，以期尽可能多地收集这次撞击的情况。

It was taken on June 27, 2005, when the spacecraft was 6,229,030.3 kilometers (3,870,719 miles) away from the comet. Three images were combined to create this picture, and a logarithmic stretch was applied to enhance the coma of the comet.

截止世界时6月23日，该彗星的实际观测亮度在10.3等左右徘徊。

不过凝结度很低，只有3至4！没有大镜子的同好们观测到有一定的难度。

The coma appears almost perfectly circular again tonight, with no visual hint of the extension seen just a few days back. It is likely that this feature is continually visible with CCD imagery, but it may be fading and brightening to some extent on a regular basis as far as visual observations are concerned, as observing conditions locally have remained very constant over the period concerned.]
