有必要介绍一下VST是什么，它其实就是一个2.4米口径的最新技术望远镜，但配备了一个超级巡天相机，像素达到惊人的2.68亿，视场是满月的4倍。该望远镜于2007年开始装配，预计2010年投入使用。下面这句话是图的说明：
The VST is a state-of-the-art 2.4 m telescope equipped with OmegaCAM, amonster 268 megapixel CCD camera with a field of view four times thearea of the full Moon. This image was obtained in March 2009.

20 April 2009: Lord Drayson opens JENAM 2009

Today, 20 April 2009, was the opening of the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science (JENAM 2009), which takes place at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. Lord Drayson, the British Minister of State for Science and Innovation, addressed the many attendees to this conference, expressing the importance of astronomy and space science for today’s society. He visited the ESO stand where he was introduced to ESO’s flagship astronomical facility, the Very Large Telescope, by Tim de Zeeuw, the ESO Director General, and Patrick Roche, UK member of the ESO Council. Tim de Zeeuw also talked about the future European Extremely Large Telescope, a project which the minister showed great interest for.

2009.4.24：扭曲的棒旋星系NGC 2442

The distorted galaxy NGC 2442, also known as the Meat-hook Galaxy, is located some 50 million light-years away in the constellation of Volans(the Flying Fish). The galaxy is 75 000 light-years wide and features two dusty spiral arms extending from a pronounced central bar that giveit a hook-like appearance, hence its nickname. The galaxy’s distorted shape is most likely the result of a close encounter with a smaller,unseen galaxy.
扭曲的棒旋星系NGC 2442，又名肉钩星系，位于飞鱼座，离我们约5千万光年。星系宽约7.5万光年，有2个明显的尘埃臂从其显著的核心棒延伸出去，类似一个肉钩，并由此得名。星系扭曲的外形最可能由图中未显示的小星系近距离经过的缘故。
This image is based on data acquired with the 1.5-metre Danish telescopeat ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile, through three filters(B: 250 s,V: 187 s, R: 150 s).
本图由位于智利的ESO的拉斯拉天文台的1.5米丹麦望远镜拍摄，使用了三个滤光器，曝光时间分别为红150秒、黄绿187秒和蓝250秒。
