2009 Lyrids as Reported to the North American Meteor Network
The North American Meteor Network (NAMN) issued a call for observations to
its membership on April 14, 2009 requesting members observe the Lyrid meteor
shower. With an activity period of April 16 to 25, combined with New Moon on
April 25, there were several mornings available for fruitful meteor watching.
Observers took advantage of this opportunity with at least one person out
every morning during Lyrid activity, with the single exception of April 25.
Salvador Aguirre, observing from Mexico, got the Lyrid campaign off to a
start when he was able to record 2 Lyrids between 0635-0736 UT on April 16.
The next morning (April 17), Robin Gray observing from the United States,
recorded a single Lyrid between 0802-0904 UT. The following morning (April
18), our third consecutive lone observer, Koen Miskotte, observing from the
Netherlands, enjoyed a nice watch of 1.58 hours in which he was also able to
record a single Lyrid. Those who are new to meteor observing should keep in
mind that on any given morning, just like these three observers, you may be
the only person recording activity!
After the first three mornings, additional observers began to monitor the
shower. Three observers, Tibor Csorgei (Slovakia), George Gliba (United
States) and Pierre Martin (Canada) recorded a total of 5.00 hours of
observations (Teff) on April 19. Activity from the Lyrid radiant did increase
slightly this morning with the three observers recording 2, 3 and 5 Lyrids
respectively. Hourly rates remained nearly the same for the next 36 hours or
so, until Koen Miskotte recording a total of 14 Lyrids between 2233-0245
(Teff=4.13) on April 21.
With the arrival of the Lyrid peak on April 22, many more observers
participated. In total, we had 11 observers out under the stars that morning,
with most reporting Lyrid activity ranging from 4 to 15 per hour. The
International Meteor Organization predicted that the best rates would be
observed from the Pacific Ocean area or western North America. Data from one
of our observers, Wesley Stone (United States), seems to confirm the
prediction as he recorded 37 Lyrids in 2.63 hours between 0900-1140 UT from
the U.S. west coast. This was the highest hourly rate reported to NAMN. Other
observers approaching this rate with hourly rates at or higher than 10 per
hour include Tibor Csorgei (Slovakia), Ken Hodonsky (Illinois) and Javor Kac
(Slovenia).
Once the peak was over, activity remained steady at about 7 per hour the next
morning when Robert Hays (United States) recorded 14 Lyrids between 0550-0750
on April 23. The Lyrids slowed down to 1 or 2 per hour as they approached the
end of their activity. Koen Miskotte (Netherlands) observed a total of 7 in
5.17 hours of observing on April 24. And just as he did at the start of the
Lyrid campaign, Salvador Aguirre was able to end this year’s campaign on
April 26 when he saw 6 more Lyrids in 2 hours of observing from Mexico.
