一只小蜥蜴

This anole lizard was trying to hide from my camera. I encountered the little critter in the shrubs of Florida near Tampa. Spring 2008

As I observed the filaments of this yucca plant that had gone to seed for the winter, I couldn't help but think how the filaments so readily resembled the entanglements that life occasionally may have.

This photo was taken in a moment of happenstance from the window of a moving train during a trip through the Swiss Alps with my parents in the spring of 2008. Since I've been a traveler so much of my life, I told my father that I sometimes felt like this lone tree—traveling and experiencing the world, but often ending up alone. He smiled, looked me in the eyes, and said, "Yes, but few get the view from the top."

My niece, Stefani, asked me to photograph her riding bareback on their horse, Lonestar. We drove out to the pasture and were waiting for her dad, Steve, to be our horse wrangler. Some of the horses came to investigate, and one was squashing its nose against the glass, just like a human might do. Then they started to eat my car.

Men forced from home to seek work or lost to conflict cause women to go further and further from home to take care of their families, making their security precarious.

While traveling in Guatemala, I had the opportunity to climb Volcan Pacaya, which is an active volcano not far outside of Antigua. After a grueling hike up to see an incredible flow of molten lava, I thought I'd seen what I came for. On the way back down, the already dramatic volcanic landscape was suddenly painted with the colors of a stunning sunset. It took my breath away.
