The central bank Thursday unveiled the final design of a new 10,000-won banknote with some 20 features designed to prevent forgery.
The bank plans to issue the new 10,000-won notes early next year, along with new 1,000-won notes.
``We’ve begun printing the new notes at the state mint. Everything is going smoothly,’’ said Kim Doo-kyung, head of the Bank of Korea’s Currency Issue Department. ``The timing of issuance can change depending on when new teller machines accepting the new notes will be introduced.’’
The issuance of the new 10,000-won and 1,000-won bills will complete the bank’s currency reform, which began early last year to counter soaring counterfeit notes.
The bank issued new 5,000-won notes in January, but drew criticism after some misprinted notes were found on the market.
``It was a mistake that should have not happened. We’ve taken steps to prevent the recurrence of such a disaster,’’ Kim said.
The bank has changed the design of 10,000-won notes seven times since the first version was issued in 1973. The bank stopped printing the current 1,000-won and 10,000-won notes late last year.
Like the new 5,000-won and 1,000-won notes, the new 10,000-won notes will come in a smaller size than the current ones. The new 10,000-won bill is 0.8 centimeter smaller in width and 1.3 centimeter smaller in length. The bill is 0.6 centimeters wider than the new 5,000-won note, but exactly the same in length.
The color of the new 10,000-won note is green, the same as the current one.
Among new anti-forgery features introduced on the new notes is a hologram that is seen in different colors and shapes depending on the angle it is seen from. The bank also used special inks, which make letters and pictures on the notes appear in different colors from different angles.
